This was my favourite film of this year’s Horrorthon film festival and comes highly recommended.īroadcast Signal Intrusion was viewed at the IFI Horrorthon 2021. I really appreciate both films but prefer Broadcast Signal Intrusion because I found its revelations more interesting. Both are period films about characters dealing with missing loved ones, who then become obsessed as a result of something they’ve seen on a tape. What’s incredibly curious (and in no way am I suggesting one influenced the other) is how thematically alike both Broadcast Signal Intrusion and Censor(Prano Bailey-Bond’s much lauded feature debut) are. The mystery of Broadcast Signal Intrusion is wholly gripping, aided with fantastic direction, Shum Jr’s performance and a memorable, noirish, discordant score by Ben Lovett. The film is genuinely unsettling and tense at times. These sequences capture a familiar Lynchian feeling of uncanny terror it’s hard to say what is unnerving about them, but something feels wrong. An obvious and admitted influence on these sequences is I Feel Fantastic, a now infamous online video which haunted the early days of YouTube. The film credits special effects wizard Daniel Martin ( Lords of Chaos, Possessor) with the design of the intrusions themselves. Like Sinisteror one memorably disturbing sequence from Kill List, Broadcast Signal Intrusion hones in on the power of showing its protagonist alone, watching something frightening. The most famous unsolved real world example of these was the Max Headroom Incident, which took place in Chicago, 1987. These were basically ancestors of modern hacks, where video pirates would overpower a television signal and transmit their own broadcast. One day, while dutifully logging tapes, he stumbles across an occurrence of a broadcast signal intrusion from the previous decade. Aside from a support group and an over friendly client, his only interactions are with his unseen boss, who communicates with him through post-it notes left at his desk. His wife has been missing for several years now: a tragedy that has left him leading a solitary existence, seemingly in order to guard himself against letting anyone new in.

It follows James (Harry Shum Jr.), a video archivist in late ‘90s Chicago. The film – the first to emerge from the Frightfest film festival’s “New Blood” writers initiative – was written by Phil Drinkwater and Tim Woodall. It's crazy that they never solved this mystery.Whilst it will probably appeal to anyone who enjoys a good, engrossing mystery thriller, Jacob Gentry’s Broadcast Signal Intrusion will have a particular impact on those of us who have gone down late night YouTube rabbit holes, combing through Creepypasta and “Unexplained” videos. The Federal Communications Commission investigated the incident, but never did figure out who was behind the now-legendary incident. Then, it seems, the video pirates switched to WTTW in time for “Doctor Who.” 'Max' was a fan of Clutch Cargo, given that he could both hum the theme song and name the title of the final episode I Still See the X.
WGN had been able to circumvent the intrusion. NOTE: For the sake of convenience, lets refer to the guy in the Max Headroom mask as 'Max', the girl in the maid costume with the fly swatter as 'Maid', and the cameraman as 'Cameraman'. WGN’s television signal was also hijacked that same evening, during its 9 p.m. “And probably a combination of at least two of those in order to pull this off.” “It had to be a broadcast engineer, a satellite engineer, or a ham radio operator,” he said. WTTW broadcast engineer Al Skierkewicz said they knew the culprit had to be someone with pretty sophisticated technical knowledge. The next morning, WTTW engineers tried to figure out what had happened, and how. After 90 seconds, the pirate signal disappeared on its own and “Doctor Who” returned. “And as the content got weirder we got increasingly stressed out about our inability to do anything about it,” he said. “All of a sudden we don’t have ‘Doctor Who’ on the air-we have this Max Headroom mask,” remembers WTTW air director Paul Rizzo. The staff in WTTW’s master control was frantic. Indeed, toward the end of the 90-second signal, the imposter exposed his bare bottom to an accomplice who spanked him with a fly swatter. “As it went on it got stranger and stranger,” remembers “Doctor Who” fan Gary Zielinski. 22, 1987-a Sunday night-and “Doctor Who” fans had just settled in to watch a rerun of the episode “Horror at Fang Rock.” Suddenly, the Doctor was replaced by Max Headroom-not the 1980s comedy character Max Headroom, but a guy in a mask ranting through garbled audio.
But few moments are quite as colorful-or bizarre-as the incident that happened to this very station in 1987.
Chicago television has a rich and colorful history.
