But it’s manga/anime and also the use of a shared cigarette is more sensual than it is when 2 high schoolers drink from the same cup.īut anyway, Shion tells Yasu to go and as he does she’s sad and obviously affected by it. Usually indirect kisses are a trope for the young lovers, because it is very juvenile. I don’t think he intended it, but you can definitely see the emotion on Shion’s face as we walks away that the impact of simply… returning her cigarette had on her.Īdditionally, the media trope of an “ indirect kiss” is also at play imo. So he returns her cigarette to her - but I’m not sure that Yasu really understood that by doing that… was such a weighted act. Because what had simply been a helpful act to Yasu, had always been a devoted act of love and care but things were different between Shion and Yasu now that he was dating Miu. Yasu gets the message and that is when he returns Shion’s cigarette to her before she can light herself another cigarette.īut my interpretation of the moment is that Yasu realizes the boundaries Shion is putting up and that he should not have taken that cigarette. This of course implies that when Yasu isn’t in a committed relationship with anyone, he and Shion do “mess around.”īut Shion continues and pretty much says that there isn’t anything else for them to do (or say) alone together. Shion then starts setting her boundaries in saying, “Sorry, you can go then.” When Yasu looks at her, she says she knows that Yasu is loyal to his girlfriend, so there won’t be any messing around between them. Yasu says don’t, it was enough to see that Misato was ok and she needed the sleep. Then Shion asks Yasu if he wanted her to wake up Misato since he came all this way to see her. That or she realized how the flow of their relationship was in that moment. And because I can definitely remember moments of Yasu and Mai lighting Nana’s cigarette for her… I’m inclined to say it’s a symbol of unrequited love, or perhaps just unconditional love and support just thematically? Because it’s actually not at all rare symbol of affection in NANA - people lighting cigarettes for each other. I’ll have to go back to other scenes with Yasu and Shion sometime and see if it’s a common occurrence textually or if as the reader I should just Know. It has to be a norm between them - that Shion lights cigarettes for Yasu.
